Architecture reflects society, its advances, its technical progress. Initially defined as vernacular, for decades now globalisation has tended to standardise architecture around the world. Today, it reveals wealth inequality. In an age of “star-chitects” and increasingly impressive and opulent architectural constructions, might a return to vernacular architecture offer a response to simpler, more sustainable and universally-appropriate construction?
