In this dissertation, we will explore the subject of the architecture of art museums today. Focusing on the various appropriations and evolutions of the institution due to its different stakeholders, we consider the potentially universal existence of a way to showcase artworks. We attempt to provide an answer to this question through visits, a historical route and readings. Drawing on the mosaics of paintings that covered the walls of the Louvre when it opened, the arrival of the white cube and the use of colour and black, we will also explore the “flagship” use of architecture and the way in which museums are being called into question by artists.
